SUICIDE is a subject from which adults often shy away. But when three teenage girls decided to make a film, they weren't afraid to go where grown-ups fear to tread.
Rewind is a four-minute docu-drama exploring the tragic consequences of what happens when schoolyard bullying becomes too much. It's a short film that packs a big punch, and today it will scoop a major prize at the Bayside Film Festival.
School - especially high school - is one of the most emotionally raw periods in life, an ever-changing landscape of emotion that can often leave pupils feeling excluded and wrung out. Many children experience bullying at some point, and Sandringham College year 9 students Eden Lavery, Polly Garrett and Ehlana Hakuli are no exception.
They drew on their own experiences of being victimised to create a powerful piece of drama that not only looks at the insidious nature of bullying and its impact, but how speaking out can rewrite the story.
In Rewind, a student (played by Garrett) is seen being bullied, in the classroom and at home, thanks to the invasiveness of technology. She is deluged by texts and emails at all hours and, unable to escape the torment, tries to kill herself.
At this point the film shows where the girl has a choice: she can either find the courage to talk to someone about what's happening or carry on being bullied. This time she chooses to confide in a teacher and, consequently, there is a much happier ending.
It may sound simplistic, but the narrative is drawn from experience. All three girls sought out help when they found themselves on the receiving end of unwanted attention.
''Just talking about it helped so much,'' says Lavery, who eventually sought counselling.
''Bullying is everywhere; it's global. You can't find a place where it doesn't exist,'' adds Hakuli, who had a friend attempt suicide.
The three scripted, filmed and edited the piece using a small hand-held Canon HD, a tripod and standard school software.
